Location: Des Moines (remote at this time)                  Position Status: Full Time

Salary Range: $40,000-$50,000                                     FLSA Status: Exempt

Organization Description

NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Iowa is part of the largest and oldest national nonprofit alliance dedicated to advocacy, education and support around mental health, with 50 state chapters and more than 600 local affiliates. In Iowa we have 15 local affiliates serving 49 counties. Our state chapter has eight full-time staff and a budget of $800,000. For more information visit our website at www.namiiowa.org.

 

Overview

This is a new position. The Communications & Outreach Manager will be responsible for all external communications and outreach to supporters and key stakeholders, media relations activity; content development, and internal graphic design and writing support. This person will also be responsible for the development and implementation of NAMI Iowa’s marketing, branding and communications goals and strategies.

 

Responsibilities

External communications – Draft error-free, concise blogs, newsletters, email communications, and event promotions for both NAMI Iowa and the Iowa Office of Consumer Affairs, maintaining consistent images. Create and distribute an annual report by the end of the first quarter.

Media relations — Develop and maintain relationships with members of the Iowa media, regularly pitching story ideas. Produce and distribute regular press releases. Maintain an accurate, statewide media list.

Advocacy – Work with executive director to produce and distribute a regular (weekly during the legislative session, monthly the rest of the year) advocacy update. Assist with writing position papers, public testimony, FAQs, and stories of advocates to share with legislators and executive branch officials.

Digital marketing – Optimize website content, accurately reflecting the organization’s mission, accomplishments and needs. Recommend strategies, both paid and earned, to drive traffic to the website and encourage people to engage.

Social media – Manage Facebook and Twitter accounts. Plan and write posts, create error-free content, plan paid campaigns to grow the number of Followers and boost targeted posts, and monitor audience engagement. Report the progress of social media work.

Outreach – Create an annual plan for in-person and virtual outreach with key stakeholders through exhibits, attendance at conferences, group presentations, sponsorships and paid ads, continually scanning the environment for new opportunities for engagement. Create or procure printed and digital marketing and program materials, updating as necessary.

Internal support – Provide writing, editing and graphic design support to NAMI Iowa staff as requested. Assist with PowerPoint production. Organize and maintain video and photographic library. Take photographs at events and programs, or contract for it to be done.

External support – Provide NAMI local affiliates with communications and marketing advice and support.

Planning, budget and evaluation – Develop annual communications plan with budget and short and long-term strategies. Develop measures for evaluating results. Gather result data and produce reports for Executive Director and Board.

 

Abilities & Background

Mission-focused – A desire to help all Iowans dealing with mental illness receive the help they need, when they need it

Lived experience – Personal experience with mental health challenges either as a peer or family member

Ethics — High degree of professional and personal ethics and understanding of the need for confidentiality

Detail-oriented – Superior organizational and planning skills

Entrepreneurial – Self-starter with the capability to complete assignments with little supervision

Communicative – Excellent written and verbal skills. Seeks and provides input when needed

Creative – Ability to develop visually pleasing and interesting materials

Technology Skills – Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, WordPress and graphic design software. Knowledge of and experience with EveryAction a plus.

 

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in journalism, communications or marketing
  • Minimum two years of broad communications experience, preferably in a nonprofit environment
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Deep understanding of social media platforms, social media marketing strategies and best practices and trends
  • Self-motivated and proactive
  • Organized and able to multitask and work under pressure
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Willing to work occasional evenings and weekends
  • A valid Iowa driver’s license and dependable vehicle or access to alternative transportation for local and occasional in-state travel
