Welcome Debbie Scott!
2019 is a big year for NAMI Iowa, with lots of growth planned and exciting expansions to programs. One of these is a bigger focus on the Ending the Silence program. Ending the Silence is a NAMI signature program. This is a free program aimed at middle school to college age students, school staff, or families. A lead adult gives a presentation about the facts of mental illness and a young adult follows with a presentation about their lived experience with mental illness. This program was strong in Iowa in 2018, but we want to take it even further in 2019. Debbie Scott will be our new Ending the Silence Coordinator. Please give a warm welcome to Debbie!
What will you be doing in your new role?
I will be working with existing Ending the Silence Coordinarors to promote , grow and support progression of the availability of the presentation throughout the state.
Why are you passionate about Ending the Silence?
I am passionate about the Ending the Silence program because there is a real need to educate youth, families and friends and provide resources on the importance of having good mental health.
What is your hope for this program in Iowa?
My Hope for ETS is to provide hope by meeting the needs of youth and for them to receive earlier diagnosis and treatment for a manageable lifestyle.
How did you get involved in mental health education and advocacy?
My involvement began after living with a family member diagnosed with major depressive order and 3 family members died by suicide in a 4 year time span.
